Firstly, let’s point out that stress is not necessarily a ‘bad’ thing. Without this innate ability to feel stress, the species would not have survived. Our cavemen ancestors, for example, needed the natural stress response to save them from potential danger, such as a sabre-toothed tiger.
Stress is primarily a physical response. When we get stressed, the body thinks it is under attack and reverts to ‘fight, flight or freeze’ mode, releasing a complex mix of hormones and chemicals such as adrenaline and cortisol into the body to prepare for physical activity. This causes a number of automatic reactions, from diverting blood to the muscles to shutting down unnecessary bodily functions such as digestion.
Therefore, that heart pounding, fast breathing sensation is the adrenaline (as well as a boost of energy), which enables us to focus our attention so we can quickly respond to the situation. In the modern world, the ‘fight or flight’ mode can still help us survive dangerous situations, such as quick reactions to a person running in front of our car.
The challenge is when our body goes into a state of stress in situations it perceives as dangerous, such as sitting exams or doing a presentation at work. When the automatic responses kick in, brain function is minimised, which creates an inability to ‘think straight’, our digestion is shut down stopping us from processing our food correctly, and our blood pressure and sugar level increases, leaving us open to more severe health problems if we continue to survive in this state for long periods.
Are you doing enough to heal effects of modern, everyday stress or are you simply coping?
Consider adding Reiki to your self-care practices. It is a Japanese stress-reducing technique based on the energy of the body (similar to acupuncture). The treatment is non-invasive, painless, cannot do harm and is a complement to traditional medicine.
How does Reiki Help with Stress?
The stress you face every day, along with more profound emotional pain and traumas you may carry effects the way your life force energy (also referred to as chi or ki) flows in and around your body. You may not know it, but you are an energetic being, and you exchange energy every day in everything you do. Sometimes that energy builds up and gets stuck leaving us feeling heavy, stuck, stressed, overwhelmed or in pain.
Relaxation and pain management - A Reiki practitioner places his or her hands lightly on or just off your fully-clothed body to balance the life force energy that all living things possess. By relaxing and letting go, we can remove blocks that cause pain in our body. Reiki allows you to let go of things that no longer serve you which can manifest as pain in your body. This is done in kind, gentle ways, allowing you to feel safe and move forward in life.
It helps calm the stress response in your body - Although it’s unlikely you can eliminate all the stressors in your life, Reiki treatment is one way you can change your response and your relationship to those stressors. It gently induces a state of deep relaxation calming your body’s stress response.
My clients frequently report feeling much calmer in stressful situations than they did before beginning their Reiki treatments. They also say that they recover faster if they do become stressed.
Gaining Clarity – Reiki can help you let go of the overwhelming or spinning thought patterns that we can fall into. Many of my clients report that following Reiki, they can think and see more clearly, it can help give us a positive shift in perspective.
You Deserve to Feel Better - Living a life of stress, worry and anxiety is NOT the life we are meant to be living. It is our natural state to be in peace and harmony, but most of us have forgotten how to live this way. Reiki healing helps us to realign with this natural state of peace and let go of the stress and anxiety that does not serve us.
The sources of stress can seem endless. Fortunately, you can choose strategies to help you heal the damage done and prevent further imbalances from stress. Reiki may support you in feeling better, and when you feel better, everything feels better.
My clients usually feel incredibly relaxed, and many fall asleep. When this energy begins flowing the way it is designed to, you may start to feel more positive, connected to life, grounded, balanced and more able to focus. These benefits often last long after the session.
