Pregnancy Massage

Time out for you and your bump

Pregnancy is a beautiful time for most women, but with the joys of a new baby's development, many changes to the Mother's body are putting pressure on the joints, ligaments and organs, often causing discomfort and pain.

There is much research to support the benefits of pregnancy massage. It can help to alleviate aches and pains and other common health problems that occur during pregnancy. Preparing for the arrival of a little one can be exciting, but can also be stressful. Massage can help to reduce the stress levels due to its calming effect.

Other research shows that the baby can benefit greatly from massage as the feel-good endorphins released by the Mother are passed to the baby during the massage. Receiving regular massage throughout the pregnancy can make the Mother more aware of her own body. This can help with the ability to relax during the first stage of labour, often resulting in shorter and more comfortable births, less pain and a lower rate of postnatal complications.

Pregnancy massage is suitable anytime after your 12-week scan right up to your due date.

The Benefits

  • Stimulation of the circulation - This will feed and aid the development of the baby as essential nutrients and fluid are distributed to the vital organs of the body, especially the placenta.

  • Lymphatic drainage - helps to reduce oedema by eliminating toxins.

  • Sluggish bowel movement - this is aided, helping to avoid constipation and haemorrhoids.

  • Releases muscular tension - often caused by postural change. Helps with tension in the upper back, shoulders, lower back and hips, and discomfort from sciatica.

  • Varicose veins - helps to stop them from developing.

  • Massaging the intercostal and pectoral muscles - to aid the respiratory system and breathing during pregnancy and birth.

  • Induces deep relaxation and sleep. Reports show that women who sleep well during the last month of pregnancy have shorter labours.

  • Helps to reduce stress, anxiety and creates a sense of wellbeing

  • Helps to balance blood pressure

  • Encourages the release of oxytocin, a pain-reducing hormone needed to control pain during labour and birth.

  • A stress-free environment is created, which in combination with the Mother's healthy diet and lifestyle, allows a peaceful and loving growth for the baby.

The Treatment

This is a beautiful side-lying massage tailored to the Mother's needs. I am fully qualified and use organic oils, specialised pregnancy massage techniques and positions to ensure comfort and safety for both the mother and the baby.

Acupressure points and gentle stretching exercises can be incorporated if the client is suffering from morning sickness, leg cramps, oedema, breathing difficulties or lower back pain and sciatica.

Please allow extra time for your first visit for a consultation to ensure massage is safe and appropriate for you. If you have any concerns about massage, are having a difficult pregnancy or unusual health issues, then please speak to your midwife or doctor who will offer advice (and may even recommend massage!).

An inspired treatment that connects Mother and Child.
